What's new in v2.2.0

Powering up your workflows with Bring-Your-Own-Key (BYOK) AI features: local-first AI Insights, auto-tag suggestions, and support for your favorite LLM models.

AI Assistant — Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)

Snipext now features a powerful, fully customizable AI Assistant that brings intelligent automation to your reading workflow while remaining 100% private. Best of all, you bring your own API key, so you pay only for what you use, directly to the provider, with zero markups.

Setup is simple: open Settings → AI Assistant, choose your preferred provider (Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, or OpenAI GPT), paste your API key, and save.

AI Insights

Hover over any highlight card and click the ✨ AI Insight button to generate a concise, 1–2 sentence synthesis explaining what the snippet is about and why it matters. The AI Insight appears directly on your card, clearly labeled. Your personal `Note` field remains untouched, and you can regenerate the insight at any time.

Auto-Tag Suggestions

When you request an AI Insight, Snipext also generates smart, contextual tag suggestions based on the content of your highlight. These suggested tags are displayed as dashed chips. Click any suggested tag to instantly add it to your snippet, or click Dismiss to ignore them.

100% Local, 100% Yours

To maintain Snipext’s core promise of absolute privacy, your API keys are stored solely in your browser's local storage and are never shared. Calls go directly from your browser to your selected AI provider. There are no intermediate servers, no analytics, and no logs.

Sync and Obsidian Integration

AI Insights fit seamlessly into your existing workflows. The new aiNote field is automatically included in GitHub Gist sync and JSON import/export. Additionally, a new {{aiInsight}} template variable has been added to the Obsidian integration, letting you render AI-generated insights beautifully alongside your markdown notes.
